Imitation, The Greatest Form of Flattery: Kojima’s Greatest Influences [4/4/2014]
The inspiration for Meryl Silverburgh in Policenauts came from the character Kitche, from the manga Crying Freeman: The Wind and the Crane. As you can see in the photos. Meryl posing with the knife in the game and some of the promotional art are almost exact copies of the images from the manga, with the bottom selection used a decent comparison of the wild hair that Meryl inherited from Kitche.
Though, their characters are opposites, Kitche being an assassin, whose mission is to kill the protagonist and Meryl, part of BCP’s Vice Unit and a former member of High Tech Special Forces Unit FOX-HOUND, whom is aiding the protagonist. Both are comparatively bad-ass, tough women.
FUN FACT: Kitche is actually an African American. She bleaches her skin and dawns a wig in order the fool Freeman’s hierarchy, so she can get close enough to kill him.
